The Effects Of CBD On Sleep

Things you Should Know about CBD and sleep.

There are hundreds of active cannabinoids in the Hemp plant that are responsible for the effects on the brain, and the two most abundant of these are delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).

CBD Is just one of the many different molecules unique to the Cannabis plant that makes it so amazing. People using CBD for medical conditions report being able to take CBD without experiencing the intoxicating effects of THC as well minimal serious side effects.

What Is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) oil comes from the Hemp/Cannabis

plant and has become increasingly popular for alternative therapy for a wide range of conditions. People globally use CBD oil to help with anxiety, reduce pain, and sleep disorders, but due to the prohibition of cannabis and research restrictions, it is harder than necessary to obtain.

CBD affects the endocannabinoids which are signaling molecules that help regulate various processes, such as pain, memory, mood, immunity, and stress. Because of the effects they produce, humans worldwide have long utilized the cannabis plant for medicinal and recreational purposes, but did you it could also be used as a sleeping aid?

There has been a growing public interest in the last decade around the benefits of marijuana and CBD which has encouraged researchers to dive into deeper studies on its effects.

5 Benefits CBD Can Offer According To Studies

1. Sedative Effects

It has been observed that in high doses CBD can create the effects of sedation and may help to improve overall quality of sleep and promotes longer rest times.

In lower doses CBD has been shown to have the opposite effect and actually stimulate and support wakefulness and increased attention.

There are several other cannabinoids that has also been shown to offer sedative effects, such as CBN, CBG, CBC, and CBDV. Because of this, its much better to use a full-spectrum extract for sleep rather than a CBD isolate oil.

One study on the effects of CBD showed that cortisol levels (the stress hormone) decreased significantly when participants took 300 or 600 mg of CBD oil. The results seems to suggest that CBD affects the release of cortisol which can possibly act as a sedative.

2. CBD May Relieve Anxiety

It has been observed that stress-induced anxiety can lead to disrupted sleep patterns.

CBD has been shown to reduce symptoms of stress and anxiety in studies.

When combined with other stress-management techniques CBD may be a useful tool for reducing anxiety symptoms which may help you get to sleep more easily when the night comes.

3. CBD May Reduce Nightmares

Clinical trials have shown that If nightmares or flashbacks are keeping you awake at night CBD may cease or significantly reduce nightmares in some people along with persistent memories. Though it’s not yet well understood exactly how CBD offers this benefit, it seems to be a commonly reported benefit of using CBD.

4. CBD May Improve Sleeping Patterns

Lately CBD has shown promising results for people experiencing REM sleep behavior disorder, which causes people to act out physically during REM sleep.

It’s been found to support those who experience excessive daytime sleepiness by increasing total sleep time which can also help to reset sleep patterns and promote longer periods of sleep.

5. CBD May Alleviate Pain

Because CBD can help alleviate pain while you sleep, CBD may help users experience better rest and longer sleeping times.

Patients have reported replacing their regular pain medications with CBD, particularly in the treatment of headaches, fibromyalgia, arthritis, and other chronic pain syndromes.

CBD can even be used to help wean people off of opiates/opioids and reduce withdrawal symptoms according to evidence.

Other uses of CBD

CBD has several properties that may make it an attractive therapeutic agent.

The first CBD-based medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is Epidiolex, which doctors prescribe to treat rare and severe forms of epilepsy. Researchers believe that CBD may also help treat or prevent:

  • chronic pain

  • opioid addiction

  • depression

  • some types of acne and other inflammatory skin conditions

  • high blood pressure

  • diabetes

  • nausea as a result of chemotherapy

However, the capacity of CBD to address these issues remains unclear, and further research is necessary.
